The Linen Tree sells a variety of luxurious sheets that offer the best of all worlds: fine quality Egyptian cotton and outstanding construction, and also a high thread count to add strength and consistency. But before you browse further: a lesson...
Contrary to popular belief, the quality of a sheet is hardly related to it's thread count; in fact a fine quality 200 thread count sheet will usually feel much more luxurious than the average 1,000 thread count sheet, and it will last longer as well. When push comes to shove, sheet quality is most directly related to:
- Where and how cotton is grown. For example, there is a small area along the Nile in Egypt known for producing the world's finest, softest, and silkiest cotton. Most "Egyptian Cotton" is not grown there!
- How that cotton is woven. Time honored techniques and innovative technologies result in much better quality control than mass production efforts, and can rid fibers of residual contaminants. Meticulous finishing techniques can make even low quality materials feel slightly luxurious.
- The length and thickness of each fiber. The longer the staple, the fewer the threads that are needed to accomplish the same result. And the thinner the threads, the less likely that yarns will break and that fabrics will pill.
While quantity by itself is often not a bad thing - it rarely makes up for a lack of quality. That is why you will usually pay a premium for fine quality linens, independent of their thread count.
