In early 1996, designer (and Bella Notte founder) Kathleen McCoy was a jacket designer, responsible for a line of polar fleece jackets under the name Marinwear. Her concept was one of “casual elegance,” elegant yet easy to wear, and easy to care for. Eager to innovate – and fond of linen – she decided to try her jacket styles in linen. Her new jackets received praise – but her buyers didn’t buy them. Faced with a couple hundred yards of unused linen lying around, she asked herself “why not try it in bedding.”

One thing led to another, and Bella Notte Linens was established by the end of the year. At its core, Kathleen’s concept was relatively simple: her favorite fabrics, soothing colors, easy elegance. Her bedding was machine washable; whereas other high-end bedding at the time was dry clean only. Also against convention, she made arrangements with a local dyer to have her bedding garment dyed, which involves dyeing pre-finished linens as opposed to yarn dyeing, where dyeing takes place prior to weaving. This was initially implemented to ensure consistency between fabrics, but the garment dyeing process also lent additional benefits; dyeing linens that have been woven and preshrunk allows for deeper color and a softer hand.

Bella Notte began celebrating its 25th Anniversary earlier this year, adding Taline – a tasseled collection of two-tone pillows and throws – and Poppy – a luscious lipstick red dye – to its line up. Now, the fall introductions. Rounding out Bella’s 25th Anniversary intros are Harlow, a subtle twist on Bella’s existing Austin collection, and two special new dyes – Fig and Moonlight.

Exceptionally sophisticated, Fig is a richly saturated garnet tone. A ripe and juicy purple with reddish undertones, it is described as a “confident color for the home,” mixing the energy of red with the calmness of blue. In contrast, Moonlight is a mid tone grey tone that varies in depth like the night sky under a moonlit reflection. It glows enchantingly in silk charmeuse, shows off its depth in velvet, and calms in linen. Intentionally introduced for Bella’s Silver Anniversary, it is a peaceful color that offers a calming, neutral base for the more spirited colors in Bella’s collection.

In 1891, Gennaro Sferra left Italy for the United States with a trunk full of handmade Venetian lace, and a vision of the American Dream. Today, his legacy lives on through the brand that he spawned. While it might not represent such a major milestone in the grand scheme, Sferra has begun to mark its 130th anniversary with some special new additions – including an updated take on Celeste, and a new limited edition collection that is instantly amongst its most opulent, and interesting collections.

Pettine adorns Sferra’s best selling Celeste sheet with embroidered, scalloped edges as well as a lined, satin stitch border. It is a new and fanciful take on Celeste, without sacrificing the concept of simple elegance. Choose from a duvet cover, flat sheet, and an array of shams; just one piece can liven your bed. Meanwhile…

Moda, Sferra’s latest limited edition collection, is an opulent study in contrast and versatility. The centerpiece of the collection is the duvet cover, featuring white 100% Giza 45 Egyptian cotton percale fabric adorned with lively green two-tone satin stitch embroidery along its hem, as well as a more subtle U-shaped pattern in the center, framing a detachable 100% silk scarf – which can serve as a decorative centerpiece on your bed, or can be worn as a scarf. The scarf itself features vivid blooms layered over the faint watermark of SFERRA’s lace ball logo, all printed on luxurious silk. Matching shams feature 100% printed silk backing to Egyptian cotton.

In case that was hard to visualize – no worries. Below are pictures of Moda, Pettine, and a variety of other brand new additions to Sferra’s line.

If you missed it, also check out Sferra’s new K三 collection, a collaboration with the late Kenzo Takada

The new year is said to be a time for new beginnings, and new energy. This idea feels especially prevalent as we gradually move on from 2020. We remain anxious to see all that our vendors have in store for us. For now: Christian Fishbacher has released a new catalog; Sferra continues to show off its new K三 Collection, an innovative collaboration with the late Kenzo Takada that was debuted in November; Yves Delorme has teased us with one new pattern from its upcoming Spring collection (see below).

For Bella Notte, 2021 is especially special, as it marks their 25th Anniversary. While there will surely be more special introductions to come, Bella’s Spring intros, just announced, are surely welcome for now. Prominent additions to the line include Taline, a tasseled collection of two-tone pillows and throws, which feature charmeuse reversing to linen, and Poppy. Poppy is a lipstick red dye that may represent Bella’s most luscious color yet; it looks romantic on linen, evocative in silk, and lush on velvet.

Sferra’s collaboration with the late, and legendary fashion designer Kenzo Takada is all about Kenzo Takada, and his vision for the home. Initially announced in January at Maison & Objet, Kenzo’s K三 (K-3) collection features furniture, ceramics, rugs, linens and more, and was created with the assistance of several manufacturing partners, including Sferra. While there are many individuals who have helped to bring K三 to life, the name of the collection references the three main collaborators behind the project — managing partner Jonathan Bouchet Manheim, creative partner Engelbert Honorat, and of course Kenzo himself.

Known for his beaming smile and mischievous theatrics, Kenzo’s innovative style became well known for it’s unexpected combinations of Parisian fashion with the colors and poetry of his native Japan. Having risen to fame as a women’s fashion icon, Kenzo spent much of the past two decades expanding his horizons, painting art and designing upholstery fabrics as well as other furnishings for the home. He launched K三 at the age of 80. Intended to be a luxury home and lifestyle brand, K三 can be considered a culmination of sorts for Kenzo – especially so now that he has passed away. Sadly, Kenzo Takada died in October of complications resulting from Covid-19.

The K三 brand has been inspired by Eastern and Western influences, with a modern twist. As part of the brand’s visual identity, most pieces bear a kintsugi mark; the Japanese art of kintsugi teaches that broken objects are not something to hide but to display with pride. The line has been divided into three collections of sorts. The nature-themed Sakura collection aspires for harmony and tranquillity through intricate floral motifs in soft pastels. By contrast, Maiko boasts vibrant reds and pinks, accented by geometric contrasts and gold accents – the collection echoes the delicate and refined spirit of the Maikos, “apprentice Geishas” who are renowned for their kimonos, as well as their delicate red and white makeup. Lastly, Shogun employs dramatic black and ivory monochromes to make a powerful statement.

Below is a preview of the three collections, with particular attention paid to many of the items that we are able to order through Sferra. The bedding collections and cushions have been manufactured by Sferra, and several ceramic pieces are additionally available through Sferra. Note that while these items can be ordered by The Linen Tree, quantities may be limited, and some items will be made custom to order. Other items in the collection may be available through other suppliers, or at the K三 showroom in France; if you see something you like, we can look into it for you.

Celso de Lemos just sent us a list of nineteen new collections, as well as swatches for each.

The Celso de Lemos brand is named after – guess who – Celso de Lemos, perhaps best known as the founder of Abyss & Habidecor. As with Abyss & Habidecor’s towels and bath rugs, Celso de Lemos bedding is generally made to order in Portugal, and is marked by luxurious material, impeccable craftsmanship, and vibrant color. The line was first distributed about ten years ago, and has grown year by year into a fairly extensive line encompassing not only a diverse line of luxe bespoke bed linens, but also loungewear and table linens.

Celso de Lemos’ bedding is not eligible to be sold online in the United States, however the current catalog can be viewed here. Scroll on for a quick preview of the new collections; these new collections include a variety of soft throws, interesting jacquards, and also sheets woven of Giza 45 Egyptian Cotton (finally, a competitor for Sferra). A few of these collections were introduced in the Spring, but we just received swatches and catalogs last week…
